It’s one of our simplest guiding thoughts – a basic creed – but like any good tequila, it’s far more nuanced and deep than the its simple appearance. What do we really mean when we say, “good tequila?” Are we talking about the cost of the bottle, as if a more expensive brand is inherently better than a more value-priced option? Are we comparing smaller batch, artisan tequila labels to the big household name, mass-produced options? Or perhaps we’re highlighting the critical distinction between true tequila from Jalisco agaves to lower quality mezcals originating outside the highland and lowlands of the Tequila region.
The fact is that Aldez packs a whole lot of meaning into the simple word, “good.” First, we choose to begin with the highest quality agaves that are grown and harvested in the traditional manner and distilled with a devotion to a time-honored process that leaves no room for cutting corners. That process ensures that the tequila itself is good – high quality with incredible flavor.
And we are proud to be a small batch, handmade artisan tequila brand that is devoted to quality over quantity. We find joy not in the volume of our sales numbers, but in the satisfaction of knowing that our discerning customers are taking delight in savoring the very best, allowing us to share in their celebrations, relaxations, and quiet moments of reflection. We’re content to let the big name, mass-production corporate brands dominate crowded parties and chain-restaurant blenders. But we go even further, because we are also committed to the idea that good tequila doesn’t just taste good, or go hand in hand with good friends and good memories. We believe that good tequila should also bring good to the environment that gave us agaves to begin with. That’s why Aldez will forever be sourced responsibly. Our bottles are crafted from the reclaimed glass of Coca Cola bottles – complete with natural variations. Our labels are printed on recycled paper and even our corks are natural & made from recycled materials. We think that’s all very good.
But perhaps the favorite facet of “drink good tequila” that we’d like to highlight is the very high standards met through our entire production process, earning us organic certifications in both the US and Europe. Aldez Tequila is one of only a small number of producers of certified organic tequila, and we agree that organic tequila without additives is the healthiest tequila you can drink.
Organic Tequila vs. Regular Tequila
In the US, organic alcohol beverages must meet the strict regulations of both Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) and the USDA. Some key components of an organic certification include:
- Non-GMO. The USDA National Organic Standards prohibit the use of GMOs (genetically modified organisms). All ingredients and processing aids must be free of any genetic engineering.
- Natural Seeds. Organic certification means that our agave farmers refrain from using genetically modified seed.
- Clean Growth. To be certified organic, our agaves must be grown without the use pesticides, and without fertilizers enhanced with synthetic ingredients or… other gross things.
- No Additives. Our organic processes does not include any additives, which some tequila brands use to manipulate color, flavor, aroma, etc.
- Regular Inspections. Government certifiers perform annual onsite inspections at our facilities to verify that our processes and ingredients are clean and maintain organic standards and do not include any prohibited substances.
Though we wouldn’t consider “regular tequila” to be good in our sense of the term, we’ll be fair and acknowledge that it doesn’t necessarily mean non-organic tequila is “bad tequila.” Should you choose to go that route, we suggest that you should take additional care when making your selection. If for no other reason, take caution since additives, chemicals, & sweeteners can not only affect the obvious (taste) and have long-term effects (some are potential carcinogens) – they can also ruin the day after you partake, since those impurities can trigger nasty hangovers!
Research where your potential non-organic tequila selection was produced, by checking the NOM (Norma Oficial Mexicana – the four digit code on the bottle that specifies the distillery of origin) to be more sure of what you’re imbibing. Distilleries are generally known either as high quality batch producers, or high quantity (mass production). We’re proud to point out that ours, NOM 1480, has a reputation for using high quality, mature agaves from family-owned fields (not purchased in bulk on the open market). The more you learn about your spirit’s origins, the more likely you will choose a tequila from a distillery that produces great liquid.
